A few random opinions on the eve of A-Day in Tuscaloosa and Auburn.
Missed Opportunity - The Tigers missed a golden opportunity for national exposure when Auburn rejected ABC's offer to televise an Auburn/UCLA season opener next year in the Georgia Dome. Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs told ABC the Tigers' 2010 schedule was already full, but he would love to entertain the idea in 2012.
Yes, the Tigers are already playing Clemson next season, and yes, adding UCLA would've forced Auburn to give up a home date, but that would've been a small price to pay in exchange for the recruiting buzz and fan interest a big intersectional (SEC vs. PAC 10) matchup would've created.
Friday Iron Bowl - I'm okay with it. Why let LSU and Arkansas "hog" (get it?) that prime day-after-Thanksgiving slot all to themselves? I know Friday is a work day for many, but so is Saturday (health care, retail, food service, etc.). The kids are out of school. Many people already make it a four-day weekend, anyway. If you want to see the game, either in person or on TV, you find a way, right? Am I missing something?
Yes, there will be a dozen high school football games that night, and we will still cover the Fever Country teams who will be playing. No, they won't get as much "air time" that night as they would if the Iron Bowl were on Saturday, but we'll still make sure they get plenty of attention between that night and the Super Six the following week. Which brings me to my last point....
Super Six Shuffle - Great move by the High School Athletic Association. What a thrill for Fever Country's finest to get to play at Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare. From a coverage standpoint, it's much easier for us to get to Auburn than Tuscaloosa, but we'll still make it to T-Town when our local teams are playing.
Thanks for reading the Journal!
See you next time.
God bless - Jeff
